2015 Christmas Tree Elegance is Dec. 1-13

Two of Spokane's outstanding destinations, the historic Davenport Hotel and River Park Square shopping and entertainment complex, will host Christmas Tree Elegance December 1-13. Christmas Tree Elegance is a raffle of 18 themed custom-decorated trees with prizes which include gift certificates, items and cash valued at $5,000 and a Father Christmas sculpture and a custom doll house. The chance to win one of the fabulously decorated trees and all its themed gifts has been a Spokane holiday tradition for more than 30 years.

Twelve decorated trees and a Father Christmas sculpture by Elizabeth Raol will grace the mezzanine of the historic Davenport Hotel. Sales for the Davenport trees and Father Christmas will end on Dec. 12 with the drawing for winners at 9:30 pm.

Six holiday trees and a three-story custom doll house will line the second floor corridor at River Park Square. Sales for the River Park Square trees and the doll house will end on Dec. 13 with the drawing at 5 pm.

This year, two of Christmas Tree Elegance's popular events have been combined to create a blockbuster Holiday Luncheon with Eckart and Friends at 11 am on December 9. Spokane Symphony Music Director Eckart Preu and 10 members of the orchestra will present a program of popular favorites. Door prizes and other fun activities will be included. Tickets for the luncheon in the Davenport's Grand Pennington Ballroom are on sale now. Reservations are required by calling 509-458-8733.

The annual extravaganza is created and sponsored by Spokane Symphony Associates, a 300-member volunteer organization that raises more than $250,000 in support of the Spokane Symphony each year.

Coeur d'Alene Symphony Holiday Concert, December 3 & 4

Join the Coeur d'Alene Symphony in a magical evening at the annual Christmas Concert, 'Realm of Ice and Snow'. Performances will be at the Salvation Army Kroc Center Theatre, Thursday & Friday, December 3 & 4, starting at 7:30 pm.

The Orchestra will start the show with Tchaikovsky's First Symphony, 'Winter Dreams.' This symphony cost the composer more labor and anguish than any other work. This is perhaps not surprising considering it was his first major effort as a professional composer, and he was one of the first Russian composers to complete a symphony.

After intermission, the second half of the concert will feature Alfred Reed's 'Russian Christmas Music'. Reed takes us to Old Russia during the jubilant Christmas season, using an ancient Russian Christmas carol, with elements derived from the liturgical music of the Eastern Orthodox Church, and original material.

The program continues with several popular Christmas tunes, arranged by North Idaho native arranger and composer Nick Thorpe. This portion of the concert will feature Mackenzie Ross, backed by the Saint George's School Symphonic Choir.

Tickets are available now by calling 208-660-2958, or online at www.cdasymphony.org.

Pat Schilling's 2016 Calendar is spectacular

There are a variety of photographic subjects to shoot in and around Spokane. Sometimes, the subject lends itself to vertical (portrait) format. The 2016 calendar by photographer Pat Schilling shows 12 images presenting Spokane's landmarks in that view.

One of the first things one notices about the city is its park system. You can start with Riverfront Park, in the heart of the City. You have the Clock Tower, the Looff Carrousel, and Spokane Falls, all within a short walking distance. The other major park is Manito, about 5 minutes from downtown. There, you'll also find the Nishinomiya Japanese Garden, and the Duncan Garden, both true photographic treasures. Each landmark of Spokane offers something unique. Each month on this calendar offers a unique view of Spokane.

Calendars are $14 each (plus sales tax for WA residents), includes shipping. Order your calendar at www.patschilling.com/pages/calendar.html.
