It's time for Ragtime at CdA Summer Theatre

The Coeur d'Alene Summer Theatre presents 'Ragtime' August 16 - 26 in North Idaho College's Boswell Hall Schuler Performing Arts Center.

'Ragtime' paints a powerful and nostalgic portrait of the lives of a family of upper-class WASPs, an African-American couple, and a Latvian Jewish immigrant as they try to make a success in America at the beginning of the 20th century. Interweaving historical figures with fictional characters, the show illustrates poignant issues of the day, from immigration, racism, and politics to industrialization and social upheaval.

The 1998 Broadway production of 'Ragtime: The Musical' received 13 nominations for Tony Awards, winning four. It was then revived in 2009, and nominated for six more. It is widely considered to be one of the finest American musicals written in the past two decades.

Performances are Thursdays through Saturdays at 7:30 pm, Sunday matinees at 2 pm. Get your tickets at www.cdasummertheatre.com.

Local Artists Raising Funds For Non-Zombie Zombie Film

It's a classic story...boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl...and the Zombie apocalypse hits a small every-town. A non-zombie movie with zombies if you will. Three local artists are raising money to fund 'Love is Dead,' a short film about the longing for love and a little respect.

Derek Landers, Trevor Sullivan and Matt Vielle (LiD Films) are working together to put this film on the big screen. All three partners work in the creative arts field here in Spokane. Derek owns Factory Arts, a freelance graphic design company, Trevor is a graphic artist at Quinn Group Advertising, and Matt is a photographer at Hamilton Studio.

Trevor describes the film as taking place in a "small convenience store with the beginnings of a cataclysmic epidemic just outside. Our main character, the sole attending employee, finally meets his dream girl on the night that everything changes..."

Money is being raised through the end of August through Kickstarter.com: a fund raising site the helps artists securely raise funds for new projects. The goal must be reached for the film to get the funding. You can see the trailer and donate towards the project at kickstarter.loveisdeadfilm.com. Because the living-dead know the pang of love's vulnerability just as much as the living-living.
